Stop thinking about everything right now and notice that every moment is like when you close your eyes as you bite into a delicious ice-cream or kiss a beautiful woman, or win a competition. Then notice the moments before and after, the moment you draw the cold spoon to your mouth, the moment the cold slides down your throat starts to only remember that it just delighted in tasting, the heartbeat quickening as you fell the imminent kiss as certain just before you close your eyes, the reopening of they eyes knowing noone but your memory can take away the realness of the previous moment, the feeling of near physical exertion as victory draws near, and the relaxing of muscle and mind as the assurance of the win crystallizes in your self. The past, the one you remember, is simply a collection of those moments where the particular combination of feelings you felt at a certain moment felt delicious. Bittersweet in perfect balance or in another way a harmonious combination of feelings unremarkable by themselves but grandiose in combination. These "cocktails of emotions" stick in your mind as solid events more than any raw overwhelming moments of simple "feeling". Who can actually relate to the blind moments of satiation of hunger, or an orgasm, or a heroin flash rather than the web of emotions leading to and from them.
The future? What we want in the present, sometimes not very pleasurable, is glimpsing the future exotic cocktails accessible to us after "the work". Study now to get a good job in the future, at the moment you feel in control and have the money to buy what you want, this makes you happier than the actual object. Strive for a position of power to one day feel the cocktail of emotions of people swirling around your leadership. Tasting the power is more important than simply having it.
