Sometimes people command me: "Don't generalize!" which for me is borderline criminal and exposes instantly the naiveté of who I'm dealing with. Generalizing is a powerful human mental tool for all manner of intellectual activity, it is one of the things making civilization possible. It does have its faults, but only if you consider it an ideology rather than a tool, a tool for sketching out a full picture still beyond your grasp. Moreover, a critic of generalizations demonstrates that he thinks he (and everyone else) is special, unique, that his body and mind aren't a result of millennia of genetic evolution or that his beliefs are not a simply reflection of his social environment.
The content of your mind is not your choice, and being aware of this brings you a certain clarity as you accept the more mechanical aspects of your existence, and not just the mechanically physical ones like breathing and defecating, but the mechanically mental ones such as jealousy or pride. It seems strange, but by accepting you are atomic in relation to a system, you gain the ability to abstract yourself and envision this system from an outside perspective, whereas if you don't you are doomed to remain blindly stuck in it.
Pragmatically what does this mean in life? It means you have another guide. Any time you find yourself in a new situation you feel a course of action, your hereditary instinct talks to you, it doesn't know morals, only preservation (physical or social). You can also be sure that most other humans with similar background will have the same drives, convinced they are their own. At this point you can choose to jump out of the system and try to compose from the big picture the place you want to end up, should the non-instinctual path prove more beneficial.
The alternative is usually unfortunate: a regular person usually ends up denouncing their choices as the temporal and emotional gap from the event widens. Or worse still, through rationalizing they end up appropriating their chaotically determined actions as part of their intrinsic personality. Like that is who they are. Always remember though, you are an animal, but if you relinquish thought, you relinquish that very aspect which makes you human.
